Dr. Oroszlan obtained his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Georgetown University. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at NCI from 1961 to 1963. After conducting biochemical research on retroviruses at the Albert Einstein Medical Center, George Washington University School of Medicine, and Flow Laboratories, he returned to NCI in 1976. From 1983 to 1995, he served as Director of the Molecular Virology and Carcinogenesis Laboratory, ABL–Basic Research Program. His studies have provided invaluable information on the biosynthesis of retroviral enzymes and structural proteins. Dr. Oroszlan was named one of the most highly cited researchers in microbiology by the Institute for Scientific Information. He has been awarded three U.S. patents and one European patent on HIV protease and one U.S. patent on chloroquine as an inhibitor of infectious HIV production.
